About Ethos76
This blog was started in response to growing evidence that the American Experiment is experiencing an identity crisis. What does it mean to be an American, and what shared principles bind us together? Our founding citizens forged our Declaration, our Constitution, and our Bill of Rights in a way that provides direction in answering these questions.
After the American Revolution, a fervor embodied these ideals into a "Spirit of 76."

Edmund Burke was a member of the English Parliament and witnessed the birth of our nation. In 1775, he gave a speech to the House of Commons regarding America. In that speech, he coined the idea of a Spirit of Liberty that enshrines why our nation was on a path to independence. "In this character of the Americans, a love of freedom is the predominating feature which marks and distinguishes the whole. ...This fierce spirit of liberty is stronger in the English colonies probably than in any other people of the earth"

Ethos 76 is intended to rekindle this spirit by recognizing the wisdom and good in the philosophy of our founding citizens. To rethink the negative narratives we see today in terms of the common good in the American Experiment.
